Christians believe that they have been saved by faith and live by faith. But what does it really mean to have faith in God? Hebrews 11:1 defines faith in God as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Let’s take a look at this example from the Bible on the woman's story with an issue of blood. In Matthew 9: 21-22, she said to herself, “If only I touch his cloak, I will get well. “Jesus turned around and saw her, and said, “Courage, my daughter! Your faith has made you well.” At that very moment, the woman became well. Her belief and assurance that Jesus could heal her was the reality or substance of what she hoped for. It gave her confidence and trust that she would receive healing.
As Christians, it is crucial to understand that authentic faith is more to do with the heart than the head. In that, we should genuinely be trusting in God rather than trusting in a set of declarations about Him. We know that we completely trust our Lord when we find ourselves at peace, even in dire situations, as we know He will hold us and sustain us even in challenging situations.
Faith in our Lord is the assurance, trust and confidence in Him. We often show that we have faith through service and obedience to God. In James 1:6, it is evident that God is displeased by people who don’t entirely trust in Him. This scripture states that “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.”
Those who do not have confidence in our Lord will be unable to deal with challenging situations in their lives, for they do not entirely trust that He can do it. Hence, they end up being victims of circumstances.
Luckily, God still cares and would love it if everyone confidently relied in Him. The Bible in Hebrews 12:2 describes Jesus as the author and perfector of our faith. Hence, we should always ask God to perfect our confidence level in Him. Remember, trusting in Him is increased through drawing close to Him through prayers and doing as the word instructs us. Faith does not originate from us; it comes from the Lord. Hence always ask God to instill faith in you.
